mehndi

In the Indian subcontinent, mehndi (also written mehandi) is a form of body art and temporary skin decoration in which decorative designs are drawn on a person’s body using paste, made from the powdered dry leaves of the henna plant, which is then applied to the skin.

Originally, henna was used to reduce heat in the body. To keep the body cool, a dot was placed on each hand’s palm. People who used henna for the first time began adding lines and other shapes to the original dot on their palms because they were bored with the appearance. These designs eventually evolved into what we see today, thanks to this elaboration and refinement.
